As Thanksgiving approaches I often try to think of things to be thankful for. I feel that during this time of economic hardships in our nation our view gets sidetracked from what we still have to be thankful for. I am going to go over some of the things we have to be thankful for. Well, for the most part if you are reading this then you have access to the internet. It may be on your phone, at the library or some other public place that offers internet. We can be thankful for internet access where we can upload a resume or look for a job in the listings. If you have internet access at home than you can be double thankful because you have a home with internet access.
I know through personal experience that having a warm place with four walls and roof safe from predators who want to eat you, rob you or kill you is a great thing to be thankful for. If you are staying with relatives or friends during this holiday season and they are helping you by letting you stay with them you not only have a warm, safe place to lay your head at night but you also have a friend who is able to help you out. Quite often Shelters are full and many have no place to rest safely. Be thankful you are safe and warm and with someone who cares enough to help.
If you have relatives or someone in your life to care about you than you have something to be thankful for. I have met more than I would have liked who had no one. They were alone. Their parents had passed they had no relatives who cared and they had no real friends. Having someone to care about and who cares about you is something to be thankful for because not everyone has that. I once met a young couple who had a young sibling along and they were homeless. The mother was in a shelter but there was no room for the older sister or her boyfriend. The young brother about 10 years old didn’t have a place to go. They were thankful for each other and the others in the camp because together they would survive. We can be thankful for hot showers and warm baths because some don’t have that.
We can be thankful that we have food and basic necessities and a little more because I see many who do without. The one thing about Thanksgiving is that in this time of year around this American holiday, we in America are brought back to what we have and can count our blessings no matter how small. I may not have much but I am thankful that I have it at all.
